What is the Difference Between Chloride and Chlorine?

Chlorine and chloride are related but distinctly different. Chlorine is a chemical element with the symbol Cl. In its elemental form, chlorine is a greenish-yellow gas that’s quite reactive and commonly used as a disinfectant, or in the production of various chemicals.

Chloride, on the other hand, which is in ASEA in small amounts, is the ion form of chlorine, where it has gained an electron to form Cl⁻. Chloride ions are found in many compounds, like sodium chloride (table salt), and are crucial for various biological functions, including maintaining fluid balance, transmitting nerve impulses, and making up several types of Redox Signaling Molecules.
